A plea for peace and payments from Eric B & Rakim

Your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper’s favorite rapper is probably Rakim. If you don’t know Rakim you probably love starring at your phone screen, swiping left and right on any app that refreshes what strangers do daily and order your food from Postmates. And all of that is cool. What that means is Rakim is old. He is older than regular old rappers like Nas and Jay Z. However, Rakim Allah helped lay the groundwork for rappers to enter the realm of hip hop with a jazzy, calm melodic flow.

Eric B is Rakim’s DJ. Together they are Eric B and Rakim.

One of their most popular songs is “Paid in Full”. This song has been sampled over and over, you’ve probably heard it or at least heard parts of it time and time again even if you didn’t know it.

This rap duo was ahead of their time. That point is almost undebatable. Their style was wildly unique.

What I love about this is priorities. It’s clear what they want. And if you don’t know, its to be paid in full! Period.

You ever had someone owe you money? Did or do you like that feeling? Of course not. One way to get away from that situation, thats right, ask them to pay you in full to start.

Throughout the song you get some good bars of course.

Thinkin’ of a master plan
‘Cause ain’t nothin’ but sweat inside my hand
So I dig into my pocket, all my money spent
So I dig deeper, but still coming up with lint

So I start my mission, leave my residence
Thinkin’, “How could I get some dead presidents?”
I need money, I used to be a stick-up kid
So I think of all the devious things I did
I used to roll up, this is a hold up, ain’t nothing funny
Stop smilin’, be still, don’t nothing move, but the money

But now I learned to earn ’cause I’m righteous
I feel great so maybe I might just
Search for a 9 to 5, If I strive
Then maybe I’ll stay alive

Some good penmanship right there.

Shortly after this you hear, right as the song is about to end, “yo what happened to Peace?” the reply goes “Peace, peace, peace…”

What I learned from this:

  • Do something new. Lead the way with intrinsic innovation and you will be rewarded
  • Get yo money, all of it (up front if you can) and remember to deliver a memorable, quality experience
  • Request peace from yourself and others

Take a listen to this classic joint.
